Description

Shrimp Saganaki is a Greek dish which is usually made of fresh shrimp, tomatoes, onions, garlic and Greek cheese, drizzled with lemon juice and herbs and finally baked until golden brown.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 yellow bell pepper, diced
  • 1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
  • Crusty bread or rice (for serving)

Instructions

Step 1: Sauté the Aromatics

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until softened, about 3 minutes.
  • Stir in the minced garlic and diced bell peppers. Cook for an additional 2 minutes until the peppers start to soften.

Step 2: Add the Shrimp and Tomatoes

  • Increase the heat to medium-high. Add the peeled and deveined shrimp to the skillet. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the shrimp start to turn pink.
  • Pour in the diced tomatoes with their juices and tomato paste. Stir well to combine.

Step 3: Season and Simmer

  • Season the mixture with dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper according to your taste. Stir everything together and let it simmer for about 10-12 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.

Step 4: Finish with Feta and Serve

  • Once the sauce has thickened to your liking, sprinkle the crumbled feta cheese evenly over the top of the shrimp mixture.
  • Let the feta melt slightly into the sauce, about 2 minutes.
  • Garnish with freshly chopped parsley before serving.
  • Serve the Shrimp Saganaki hot with crusty bread or over a bed of rice.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a splash of white wine to the sauce while simmering.
  • Feel free to customize the dish by adding olives, capers, or a pinch of red pepper flakes for some heat.
  • Make sure not to overcook the shrimp to keep them tender and juicy.
