Ingredients

Scale

For the Beef:

  • 1 pound beef (flank steak, sirloin, or other tender cuts), thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Shaoxing wine (Chinese cooking wine) or dry sherry
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

For the Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup oyster sauce
  • 1/4 cup beef broth or water
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce (optional, for a touch of sweetness)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

For the Stir-Fry:

  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
  • 34 cups broccoli florets
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

Step 1:Marinate the Beef

  • In a bowl, combine the sliced beef with soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, cornstarch, and sesame oil.
  • Mix well to coat the beef evenly. Let it marinate for at least 15 minutes while you prepare the other ingredients.

Step 2:Prepare the Sauce

  • In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, beef broth, hoisin sauce (if using), sugar, cornstarch, and sesame oil until smooth. Set aside.

Step 3:Cook the Broccoli

  • Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  • Add the broccoli florets and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until they are bright green and crisp-tender.
  • Add 1/4 cup water to the skillet, cover, and steam the broccoli for another 2 minutes.
  • Remove the broccoli from the skillet and set aside.

Step 4:Cook the Beef

  • Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil to the skillet. When the oil is hot, add the marinated beef in a single layer.
  • Cook for 2-3 minutes without stirring to let it sear and brown.
  • Stir the beef and cook for another 1-2 minutes until it’s just cooked through.
  • Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.

Step 5:Stir-Fry Everything Together

  • In the same skillet, add the garlic and ginger, stir-frying for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  • Return the cooked beef and broccoli to the skillet, then pour in the sauce mixture.
  • Stir-fry everything together for another 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce thickens and coats the beef and broccoli evenly.

Step 6:Serve

  • Serve the stir-fried beef and broccoli over steamed rice.
  • Garnish with sesame seeds or sliced green onions if desired.

Notes

  • Slicing the beef thinly and against the grain helps ensure it remains tender during cooking.
  • For a richer flavor, you can add a splash of soy sauce or a bit more oyster sauce to taste.
  • You can also add other vegetables like bell peppers, carrots, or mushrooms for added variety.
